Responsive - J2O: Fixing the Label

The logo was printed onto sticker paper and then cut out. The bottle neck stickers looked good but the main label didn't print well or look good. The font that was previously used - Aleo, worked on the packaging but on the label it was way too small to be legible. The whole label needed redesigning, the small type was removed but once the type was missing the J2O logo looked peculiar as it took up so much space in the circle.

The logo was stripped right back and  then different shapes were experimented with to try and find a better label. After some experimentation the most appropriate shape was an oval on its side. To this flicks were added out on each side but reversed. This helped to imply movement and fluidity in the design, The shape also resembled a leaf, this helps reinforce the idea of fruits. However no matter how it was designed or how neatly it was traced, as soon as a stroke was put around it or it was filled with colour it looked un-neat and wobbly.

This trying and failing went on for a while until the decision was made to move on and simplify the shape. I would like to go back and try to work on it again as I think its a fitting shape for the J2O logo and company. A leaf shape was created and simplified making it equal on both sides, this made the aesthetic of the design more visually pleasing because it was symmetrical. Below you can see how different areas have been highlighted. The point of this experiment was to find the most appropriate outline to represent the fruit flavours.

Above is the initial design created in its simplest form.

Overlapping was tried with the orange outline, This affect seems quite affective although it could be a concern that it is heading back down the route of the old design with coloured edges.

This is the best design so far mainly due to the simplicity of it. The logo being white on green with no outline corresponds nicely to the package design. Whilst the coloured outlines contain the shape keeping your eyes fixed in that one place and highlighting the two juice flavours.

This is the next best design as the gradient helps bring light into the label. The outlining of the logo is similar to the second design but the orange is shifted to the right instead of above, this keeps your eyes in one place and suggests progression forward leaving less green background showing through.

The two designs were combined, so the best characteristics from both the logos formed the one above. Overall it is a vast improvement on the previous design. Tomorrow I will ask for feedback and see what could be done to improve it or even if one of the other designs is better or more appropriate. This design is a lot more punchier that the previous circle one, the information in it was way to heavy and distracting, where as this label is simple. Having just the logo is a lot clearer and having the coloured strokes around the edge highlight the flavours of the drink.
