Design Principles: Type Journal 9 - Business Cards

This was a business card that was given to me whilst I was at work. The lady does drawings of animal anatomies and I thought this card was clever and different. It almost doesn't feel like a business card. Having it portrait instead of landscape seems like a very clever idea especially when including a drawing such as the one she has. It is a great way of showing her skill and gives a good idea to potential clients about the work she produces and it is something they can take away with them. The type chose for her name compliments this well, to me the serifs are almost like the bones of the animal and the colour of the text takes away a harshness and also picks out colours from the animal. The other font she uses is a script font. This seems like a creative and more personal way of saying what she does. The script compliments the serif roman font. Normally script fonts are hard to read especially at such a small point size on this card. This would normally hold something back but here I think it works very well. It almost makes you look closer to read it like you are looking closely at detail, it draws your eye to look in to her fine work on the animal. The one thing I really dislike about the typography is the layout and leading. The spacing is weird and doesn't follow a pattern. there seems to be a massive gap between the telephone number and the email address, perhaps this would be okay if the same size gap was between the script 'drawing of animal anatomy' and the address so that it was central. It also seems weird to put the telephone number closer to the address rather than the other forms of contacting.
