Covered: Previous Designs

Before beginning to design my book cover I have collected a few examples of what is already out there. Although none of them are particularly good it is useful to see how this brief has been tackled before.

100% text and also very old. Although there is a type hierarchy the text is very 'in your face'. The design is busy and the stripes of colour behind the text do not help its legibility.

This is by far the best design. Penguin have made the book their own by creating a cover which is not only intriguing but also fits in with their book range. You get lost in the design spotting new elements each time. The use of colour and shapes works really well to visually show the hard and dense content that is Beyond Good and Evil.

This is possibly the oldest cover and the type of book cover I envisage when I think of a philosophy book. An old statue with poorly laid type over the top.

This cover design is questionable. The combinations of type doesn't work well. The sizes and layout implies that no grid was used or even considered. The red apple looks like it has been drawn on paint, the cover as a whole doesn't look intriguing and doesn't make you want to pick up the book.
