Brief 2 - Design Principles - What is a Book? : Refined Questions

In our groups we presented our research and then from that had to pick 5 questions that we wanted to continue to research and feature in our double page spreads in our book. These questions didn't have to be exactly the same as the ones we have researched but interesting points that have come from them. When picking the five questions we had to bare in mind how much research we could get from them, what type of research we would need to get and how we would get it. With that in mind below are my 5 refined sections.

1. SERIF VS SAN-SERIF
  • what is easier to read?
  • why did san serif come about?
  • why and what type of people argue for which?

2. KEY ASPECTS OF READABILITY AND LEGIBILITY
  • definition of each
  • explore different font and what makes them more legible

3. HISTORY OF FONT CHANGES
  • time line
  • social impact on fonts
  • gutenburg press

4. POINT SIZES
  • their names
  • why they can't be changed

For number 5 I originally had trends in colour, which admittedly I do find interesting but it doesn't quite fit with the other 4 questions about type and legibility as they all feed into each other so they won't have to be in defined sections. So because of that I have changed it to The Anatomy of Type.

5. THE ANATOMY OF TYPE
  • look into what different parts of letters are called
  • why do some fonts have bigger bowls/counters, higher ascenders etc...

LAYOUT:
I can definitely see a potential layout being formed to fit all of this information in (however it may change when I begin researching because it will depend on how much research I get and whether I can link them well).
