Product, Range & Distribution - Part 2: Creating the Webcam Stickers

After taking inspiration for The Eagle's Eye logo from a news story where a school used the cameras to watch on students outside of college. I have decided to explore this subject more as I want to create small 1cm x 1cm stickers which can fit over the webcam on a build in laptop. I want to research further into the use of web camera's without the users knowledge. This will help to support the meaning and use of the sticker.

FBI can spy on you through your webcam without triggering the indicator light... and has had the technology for several years

This is an interesting article explaining how the FBI have been able to hack citizens computers and watch through the webcam without triggering any light or sensors. This is a real example of the internet being used as a panopticon.

Webcams Enable Hackers and NSA to Secretly Watch You
This article shows how its not only the big agencies that can hack your webcam but also everyday people. This article focuses on the story of a young girl who was watched by a boy at her school through her camera. The male student had managed to hack around 300 cameras from around the world. This really adds another layer of fear into something most people don't consider to be a problem. This is another good reason to promote the camera stickers.

Designing

The Logo
Originally this seemed like the best idea for the sticker or even just the eye without the type. However after creating it as a sticker it feels very invasive. The point of the sticker is to make the person feel at ease. I think having a huge angry eye staring at them would probably defeat this.

Red
This red has been used throughout the campaign so far. It is a strong colour that visually represents saying no to spying. It is a colour of anger and also warning; it acts as a warning against the camera its covering.

Blue
Blue, again, has been used throughout the campaign. There is nothing it can really signify, however it can be put with other elements to add a bit of colour.

The Key Hole
The key hole was used at the centre of my visual design. In the design it has an eye peaking through it to symbolise NSA and whoever else peaking through into our lives. In context of the sticker, it needs to show that it has stopped people looking through. By leaving the key hole a solid black it show no eye is there - no one can watch.

Visual Design
Removing the triangle from the visual design I created left the inner circle. This fits perfectly into the circular sticker, however I am slightly concerned that the detailing involved may be too small for the sticker. The design may not be clear, although if it comes in a pack with the badges and bags then perhaps it would be clear enough. As an alternative I could take elements from the design to use instead of the whole thing.

Redacted Lines
The redacted lines clearly symbolise privacy. They are used in everyday life as a way of keeping certain information private by physically blackening it out. Applied to this design the sticker represents keeping the user's information private.

The Panopticon
This design is supposed to be a very simple illustration of the panopticon designed by Bentham. The structural design allows one person the possibility to see everyone in the cells. The analogy of the panopticon has been used by various people throughout my research. One source referred to the internet as a panopticon. Thats exactly what it is when the FBI are hacking into the webcams and watching people.

The star
The star was supposed to refer to the stars on my visual design. However after creating the sticker it doesn't look right. The sticker looks patriotic which is the exact opposite message from my campaign. Although I have chosen to use the red and blue I will have to be careful what context I use them in as the designs need to clearly show a campaign.

I will use a range of these designs to create as stickers. I will also create larger stickers with the bigger designs on so that people can stick them to their mac or wherever they want to show support for the campaign.
