Brief 1 - Visual Thinking/ Alphabet Soup: Primary Research into Instruments

Since my word was instrument I wanted to look at the shape of musical instruments to see if I can get any inspiration from their shape or design. The local music shop had a great display of instruments. Below shows the photos Ive taken.

The saxophone has a lovely sharp curve to it which would reflect well on some of the letters such as the J. Another nice factor on a purely asthetical point is how the shape starts of small, thin and delicate but suddenly works into this larger complicated piece of art.

The music stand is an essential for any musician and the shape and idea of ridges and circular holes could be used in the design of my alphabet.

The violin is another interesting instrument with the shape. The sharp pointed corners and carved out detail makes it ideal to study at and take inspiration from when creating the letter form.

The curves and lines of the guitar is something that could be transferred into the type. Exploring the idea of shaded areas and even the strings.

The piano simply is broken down into different sections and octaves. Breaking my letters down in a similar sense may work or even lining them to represent the break in the keys.

Looking at different instruments has been very beneficial as it has given me a variety of images to refer to. The shape and sizing of the instruments is interesting and will be explored in the designing of the alphabet.
